A poor young girl, A Li, goes up the mountain to gather medicinal herbs and accidentally rescues Xuepo, a mountain-guarding mythical beast that fell off a cliff, receiving a cornucopia bowl that can endlessly produce grain. She and her grandmother rely on it to get through food shortages and lend rice to starving neighbours. When the grain merchant Xu Dachang learns of this, he first tries to buy the bowl, and upon being refused, sends men to raid the Liu household at night, even digging up old debts to force them to hand over the treasure. From a timid girl who dared not speak up, A Li gradually learns to keep accounts and verify evidence, joining her neighbours to expose the truth about the Xu family hoarding grain to drive up prices and concealing debt-settlement receipts. After the turmoil passes, she continues to use the bowl to help others with grain while also planting vegetables and saving seeds with the villagers, living an honest and peaceful life.
