On the third day of the third lunar month, marking three years since her mother fell into a deep sleep, four-and-a-half-year-old Shen Xiaoman shoulders her little herbal basket, pockets five peace buckles, and brings along Yuanbao, a talking orange cat, down the mountain to search for family. Her mother said, "Find all five benefactors to dissolve the Wangchuan Gu poison." But little did she know, her mother had personally carved six buckles back then—and the sixth one was sewn right over the heart of the father she had never met. Xiaoman can hear the inner voices of all living and inanimate things: door knockers lodge complaints, poisoned wine cries out injustice, and silver coins weep. Along her journey slapping down corrupt elites, five godly uncles take turns shielding her fiercely. Until that night, when the Regent bends down to look at her, the old buckle at his chest suddenly burning hot, and asks: "What is your name?"
