Fisherwoman Gu Wantang rescues Xiaoman, an orphan girl born with the ability to hear the water, from the river. Even though barely scraping by, she insists on keeping her. Soon after, upstream waters turn black, fish die in droves, and the family's fish pond is poisoned in the dead of night. Refusing to yield, Gu Wantang and Xiaoman trace the truth step by step, discovering that the foul black water leads to a secret conduit of the Wei Family Dyehouse—unraveling a sunken-boat mystery from seven years ago.
