Older single woman Wu Meina and Lin Xiaobei have been dating for three years and are ready for marriage. Wu's mother is exceedingly greedy, adamantly demanding an exorbitant bride price and pushing Lin Xiaobei to the brink until he calls off the wedding on the spot on the big day. Far from feeling remorse, the Wu mother and daughter refuse to return the bride price under the pretext of his breach of promise. Disregarding Lin's father's fragile health, they falsely claim Wu Meina is pregnant to keep extorting money from Lin Xiaobei. Once he learns the truth, he decisively cuts ties with both of them. Later, encountering rejection after rejection in matchmaking, the Wu family realizes they let a good man slip away—while Lin Xiaobei has already found a wonderful match. In the end, Wu's mother is arrested for extortion, leaving mother and daughter drowning in regret.
