Eight-year-old Gu Nianyao was tragically abducted and trafficked when she was very young, then adopted by Zhao Tiezhu and Wang Xiu'e and renamed Zhao Xiaoya. During her eight years in Xinghua Village, she has shouldered grueling household chores and vaguely sensed how differently this family treats her, with the family even intending to keep her as a child bride for their son. Kept close to her body is a silver longevity lock from her infancy—her only memory of her biological family. On her way to the village market one day, she happens upon a flyer searching for lost kin and discovers that her adoptive mother intentionally hid the missing person notice concerning her true origins.
