Gu Beichen, young marshal of the Zhenbei Army, hid his identity to investigate an old case, posing for three years as a chamber-of-commerce clerk with a crippled leg. With the wedding approaching, his fiancée Su Wanqing conspires with another man to obtain a military supply permit, betraying his sincere love. At the wedding, Shen Qingyi, the third daughter of the Shen family, arrives in a bridal gown to snatch the groom — she is the old acquaintance who met Gu Beichen once twenty years ago and made a promise that he would 'lift her veil with his own hands'. As identities are revealed, Gu Beichen sees clearly who came for profit and who came out of true love. In the end, he leaves the falsehood behind and starts anew with Shen Qingyi, who came to keep their promise, fulfilling the purest vow of years past.
