Five-year-old Niannian lives with her mother, Xu Qingman, who suffers from leukemia, scraping by by collecting discarded plastic bottles. By chance, Niannian rescues Old Master Gu when he suffers a sudden heart attack and is brought back to the Gu household. Seeing how much Niannian resembles his son, Gu Chenzhou, the old master offers her fifty thousand a month to "be Gu Chenzhou's daughter." Believing it to be a real job, Niannian diligently stays. When Gu Chenzhou meets Niannian, he is deeply moved by her eyes, which look just like Xu Qingman's. Later, as Niannian cares for her mother undergoing chemotherapy at the hospital, Gu Chenzhou hears the melody of "Fireflies" and discovers Xu Qingman—the woman who seemingly left him for wealth five years ago.
