On a snow-swept street, the widow Shen Xiuniang parts with her late husband's only keepsake—a silver hairpin—to rescue a badly wounded three-legged golden toad from a blazing fire. The toad spits gold to repay her kindness, but this stirs the greed of local tyrants and brings to light the bloody past behind her husband's drowning in the lake. Deep underwater, an evil flood dragon wreaks havoc on Qinghe Town to reclaim its vital inverse scale. A fragile woman with deep compassion, Xiuniang scorns ill-gotten wealth, wielding a wood-chopping axe embedded with the dragon's scale to battle the evil fiend alongside the golden toad. Good deeds seek no reward and are blessed by heaven: wealth belongs only to the kind, while the greedy reap their own bitter ruin.
