Song Chuyao, the principal daughter of a noble family, is ordered by imperial decree to marry Xie Chen’an, the heir to a noble title. On their wedding night, his favored concubine Gu Xinru causes a scene. Refusing to endure the humiliation, Chuyao secures a divorce with the empress’s help. She later meets Shen Yan, an upright scholar who placed first in the imperial examinations. Resentful over the divorce, Chen’an conspires with a corrupt official to frame Chuyao’s father.
