Xu Zhiyi, a veterinary PhD, accidentally travels back in time into the body of an evil woman notorious for abusing spirit beasts. Opening her eyes, she finds herself chained to Xuan Jin, a haughty, sharp-tongued nine-lived black cat demon—and "she" happens to be the mortal enemy who took eight of his lives. To return to the modern world, she uses all her wits and skills to embark with this former top boss of the spirit beast realm on a journey to sever their chain. Along the way, they encounter Lu Zhaoye, a bright and clingy dog demon, and Qing Ci, a sharp-tongued bird demon. Together, one human and three demons brave the Demon Market to expose a dark conspiracy. She clears her name by healing beasts with modern veterinary medicine, while he, tough on the outside but soft inside, protects her at every turn. Though he constantly calls her a "foolish woman," he shields her from every deadly blow. But when the three path-tokens are finally gathered and the Covenant-Breaking Axe descends to sever the chain, she finds herself hesitating.
