In a southern town during the 1990s, former street delinquents A-Zhen and A-Qiang run a small grocery store. Convinced that their quiet son Chen Xiaodong is a slow-witted kid with no knack for books, they only hope he will inherit the shop to make an honest living. Little do they know that eleven-year-old Xiaodong has long been ranking at the very top of his grade—a secret revealed by a tin box brimming with awards and exam papers. Uneducated yet fiercely devoted, the couple lavishes love on him in their clumsy streetwise style: stewing pig brains, bragging to everyone in sight, and creating endless comedic chaos. From graduating top of the city to earning a PhD and bringing home a martial-arts-practicing girlfriend, Xiaodong flourishes under his parents' awkward yet fiery love in this hilarious, heartwarming family story.
