Special forces commander Ning Chen time-travels to become an abused illegitimate son in the Ministry of Revenue mansion of the Great Xuan Dynasty. Facing the cold glares and suppression from the Ning family, he fights back strongly with peerless poetic talent and modern strategies. In the top scholar's tower, Ning Chen sells poems and happens to meet the Great Xuan Emperor and veteran General Chen who are on an unannounced inspection. He amazes the emperor with "Drunk, I Adjust the Lamp to Look at Swords" and three border-defense strategies, and is conferred as a silver-robed official of the Censorate. During a case investigation, seeing the miserable state of the people in Nanzhou, he angrily executes the current imperial uncle who was plaguing the region for the sake of saving the common people, causing a shock at court. In the golden palace trial, Ning Chen turns the tables with ironclad evidence and a tongue-lashing against all officials, earning permission to go to the border to redeem his crimes with meritorious service. On the eve of his expedition, he successfully builds the cross-era ultimate weapon, the "flintlock musket".
