An Shengnan, a female textile factory worker in her twenties, has been married into the Chen family for three years. Her wages and dowry have all been seized by her mother-in-law, Zhang Guilan, to subsidize her corrupt eldest brother-in-law and freeloading younger brother-in-law. With her husband Chen Jianguo acting timid and constantly smoothing things over, An Shengnan has an awakening. She forcefully reclaims financial control, gathers evidence of her eldest brother-in-law's corruption to get him fired, exposes her younger brother-in-law's charade of studying, and forces him to find work. Facing her mother-in-law's tantrums and threats of suicide, as well as her sister-in-law's schemes and blame-shifting, An Shengnan cleverly counters every obstacle. Under her influence, Chen Jianguo breaks free from being a mama's boy and fully supports his wife's pursuit of higher education.
