In the Fragrance of Cured Meat, Speaking of Sinking Boats
Lin Wanqiu, a pig-slaughtering girl in the town, was dumped in the street by her university-student fiancé, and instead took the initiative to marry Zhou Chenzhou, the lame man at the east end of the village. She thought her life would just go on like this, but unexpectedly, her reticent husband quietly handed over twenty yuan of private savings to help her make cured meat and venture into the county town. Just as their days were getting prosperous, someone came back to steal the recipe and tamper with goods to ruin them. Until the mother-in-law cried out the truth—the one who pulled her from the river ten years ago and broke his own leg was precisely Zhou Chenzhou. Lin Wanqiu took her man across hospitals and the countryside, and with a butcher's knife and an old recipe, she set the bones of her lame husband back together, and set a shaky family back on the road.
