Jiang Luyi, a modern woman, transmigrates into a book as Su Ruan, the vicious supporting female character who dies early. The original Su Ruan intended to approach Shen Zhaoye, the male lead of the original novel, but accidentally enters the room of Yan Chen, the villain, and injures him with a blow to the head. Desperate to stay alive and escape, Su Ruan pretends to be in love with Yan Chen to get through his layers of probing and suspicion. Back home, she must deal with her biased mother and the schemes and provocations within the household. Yan Chen is cold and ruthless to everyone else, but becomes increasingly possessive and obsessive toward Su Ruan, often pleading for her affection with reddened eyes and a show of vulnerability. Whenever Shen Zhaoye approaches her, he erupts with jealousy. Su Ruan fears his unhinged side, yet is moved by the way he alone protects her, leaving her torn between fleeing and staying. Their relationship remains an ambiguous push and pull as crises in the prince's manor and the inner household continue to unfold.

La Su Ruan originale voulait approcher Shen Zhaoye, le héros masculin du roman, mais elle entre par erreur dans la chambre de Yan Chen, le méchant, et le blesse à la tête. Déterminée à survivre et à s'enfuir, Su Ruan fait semblant d'être amoureuse de Yan Chen afin de déjouer ses multiples tentatives pour la mettre à l'épreuve. De retour chez elle, elle doit faire face à sa mère partiale ainsi qu'aux intrigues et aux querelles familiales. Yan Chen se montre froid et cruel envers les autres, mais devient de plus en plus obsessionnel et possessif envers Su Ruan. Il lui arrive souvent d'avoir les yeux rougis, de feindre la faiblesse et de supplier pour obtenir sa proximité. Dès que Shen Zhaoye s'approche d'elle, il est rongé par la jalousie. Su Ruan redoute son côté fou, mais elle est aussi touchée par la manière particulière dont il la protège, ce qui la fait hésiter entre fuir et rester.
