Her husband, Zhou Changshan, dies a tragic and mysterious death. Shen Qiuhe knows all too well that her family is being bullied by the neighboring Gao clan, yet she is powerless to argue and demand justice immediately. Facing relentless pressure from the village tyrants and malicious rumors from neighbors, she swallows her grief, sells the family ox, and buys nine mastiff pups to train with utmost care. Refusing to act on reckless impulse, she silently bides her time and gathers strength. Using the dogs as her gate and resilience as her shield, she protects her young child, endures humiliation to devise her plan, and vows to seek justice for her deceased husband while guarding the only home and kin she has left.
