Top provincial scholar Wei Nisheng, to defend the honor of his adoptive father Wei An, slays Jiang Yu—the Prince of Ning's heir who desecrated the spirit tablet—and ends up imprisoned. His revered mentor Feng Yan enters the imperial palace overnight to plead his cause. The Emperor uncovers the full truth, severely punishing the Prince of Ning for dereliction of duty and harming affairs of state. Though spared from death, Wei Nisheng is stripped of his imperial silver-fish pouch, jade pendant, and academic rank, yet permitted to retake the palace exam the following year to reclaim his glory. Biding his time in seclusion, he studies diligently, triumphs in the metropolitan and palace exams, and moves the Emperor with his profound essays to sweep all three top honors as Zhuangyuan. Parading through the capital, Wei Nisheng openly declares his betrothal to Feng Shu before the imperial court, steadfastly defending her standing, shedding his youthful recklessness, and officially embarking on court politics with pure dedication and responsibility.
