Wu Xi witnessed Consort Xiao swapping their newborn sons, but endured the pain in silence and raised Xiao's child. At the coming-of-age ceremony, the Second Prince shone brilliantly and was named Crown Prince, while the Fourth Prince, dressed in rags, was punished. Consort Xiao cruelly revealed the truth about the swap, driving the Fourth Prince to despair and suicide. Grieving and furious, Wu Xi was instead blamed by the Emperor. In retaliation, she exposed the secret that Emperor Li Rongjian and Consort Xue had switched babies first in an effort to place Xue's son on the throne. When the Emperor attempted to execute Wu Xi, he discovered the imperial guards had already been replaced by her family's Wu army. Wu Xi deposed the Emperor. Later, Consort Xue attempted to eliminate her, unaware that the Crown Prince was not her own flesh and blood. The Crown Prince turned against Xue, captured her alive, and exposed the Empress. After crushing the rebellion, Wu Xi accepted the imperial seal from the Crown Prince and finally ascended the throne as Empress.
