Ninety-Eight Days: The Wall is Speaking
The old 1994 brick-concrete building needed an elevator installed, and the whole building joyfully chose a rogue contractor who was cheaper by 210,000. Only structural engineer Zheng Yan stopped everyone: the west gable's load-bearing capacity was short by a full eleven tons, and directly welding the elevator shaft would cause this building to fail. What he got in return was crumpled blueprints in public, the stigma of a jinx, and a cyberbullying video with millions of views. He did not argue, pulling out 220,000 of his own money to reinforce it, yet still being treated as a joke. He only did one thing—photographing that crack every day, from a hair, to a coin, to eight millimeters. Ninety-eight days later, on a stormy night, the wall finally spoke up for him. The sound of a building collapsing awakened everyone who had ever mocked him.
