The Stranger in the Old Workshop
The story begins when Shen Zhimo knocks on the door of the old workshop. Commissioned by the county cultural center, he comes to invite Zhou Shouzhuo to apply for the provincial intangible cultural heritage representative inheritor, but is flatly refused by Zhou Shouzhuo. Zhou Shouzhuo believes that a plaque cannot save the craft, and since his son won't learn it and the villagers won't learn it, once he dies and the workshop is dismantled, nothing will be left. Shen Zhimo does not leave; he stays, learning from beating the pulp, watching the heat, to making paper, starting by beating pulp for three months before discussing anything else. While learning, Shen Zhimo uses his phone to shoot videos, recording the pulp pool, bamboo curtain, paper making, and sun drying. The videos go from over four hundred views to two thousand eight, twelve thousand, and finally one hundred thousand. Fang Nianhe from the city calligraphy association comes following the videos.

A história começa quando Shen Zhimo bate à porta da antiga oficina. Encarregado pelo centro cultural do condado, ele vem convidar Zhou Shouzhuo a candidatar-se a herdeiro representativo do património cultural imaterial a nível provincial, mas é categoricamente recusado por Zhou Shouzhuo. Zhou Shouzhuo acredita que uma placa não pode salvar o ofício, o seu filho não aprende, as pessoas da aldeia não aprendem, e quando ele morrer e a oficina for desmantelada, nada mais restará. Shen Zhimo não vai embora; ele fica, aprendendo desde bater a polpa, vigiar o lume, até fazer papel, começando por bater polpa durante três meses antes de falar de outra coisa. Enquanto aprende, Shen Zhimo usa o seu telemóvel para gravar vídeos, registando a piscina de polpa, a cortina de bambu, a fabricação de papel e a secagem ao sol. Os vídeos passam de mais de quatrocentas visualizações para dois mil e oitocentos, doze mil e, finalmente, cem mil. Fang Nianhe, da associação de caligrafia da cidade, chega guiado pelos vídeos.
