The Guiyou Manuscript of Dream of the Red Chamber
The story of the Guiyou Manuscript of Dream of the Red Chamber unfolds in three stages: the downfall of the Jia family, the calamities of a world in chaos, and the severing of worldly ties. Its overall tone is exceptionally dark and brutal, elevating a traditional family tragedy into a civilization-destroying catastrophe marked by dynastic upheaval. The book depicts a hellish end of the world plagued by marauding bandits, natural disasters, and human calamities. The Jia family's complete downfall is caused not only by the execution of Yuanchun after she is falsely accused of colluding with foreign forces, leaving the family without protection, but also, more fatally, by the disintegration of the family from within. Jia Huan, Concubine Zhao, Jia Rong, Jia Qiang, and others conspire with bandits, helping them breach the Jia residence from within. The result is an ethical catastrophe in which servants murder their masters and sons kill their fathers.
