Ode to Disguise
Zhou Fushu, the illegitimate daughter of the Zhou family, entered the palace in place of her elder legitimate sister, Zhou Zhiyuan, when they were young. Using a human-skin mask to change her appearance, she became the Imperial Noble Consort and silently endured hardships while lying low. After Zhou Zhiyuan abandoned her betrothal and eloped with a poor lover, only to meet with disappointment, she returned to the palace and publicly exposed their identities. By using a secret from the Emperor's past, she won his favor and repeatedly framed Zhou Fushu. Zhou Fushu tore off her false face and revealed her true appearance. After seeing Emperor Qi Chengyuan's cold and heartless nature clearly, she relied on the Empress's support to protect herself. In secret, she gathered concrete evidence of Zhou Zhiyuan's adultery, drugging and harming others, and other misdeeds. During the Mid-Autumn Palace Banquet, she exposed all of Zhou Zhiyuan's crimes. Zhou Zhiyuan suffered the consequences of her own actions, lost her reputation, and was banished to the Cold Palace. When Qi Chengyuan learned that Zhou Fushu, not Zhou Zhiyuan, had risked her life to save him on the snowy mountain years ago, regret overwhelmed him, and he died of illness.
