On the Day I Called Off the Engagement, I Played the Recording in Public
Lin Wan, a teacher, spent all her savings furnishing the marital home and buying a car outright as her dowry. Before the wedding, her future mother-in-law Liu Cuihua, fiancé Chen Hao, and his younger uncle Chen Jie joined forces to pressure her into waiving the bride price and handing over her entire salary and savings. Armed with bank transfer records and complete secret recordings, Lin Wan called off the engagement on the spot. Her fiancé's family spread rumors that she was materialistic and had broken off the engagement out of spite. Lin Wan publicly presented irrefutable evidence in her residential community to clear her name. The Chen family subsequently suffered one blow after another: a breach of their wedding banquet contract, relatives demanding repayment of debts, unemployment, and a bitter falling-out between mother and son. Chen Hao eventually ended his later years in poverty and disgrace. Meanwhile, Lin Wan focused on her career, earned promotions, and met Gu Yan, a doctor who shared her values. Together, they opened a new chapter of stable and happy living.
