On the Night of the Substitute Marriage, First Replace the General's Household Master
Ye Jinglan, a merchant's daughter, is schemed against by her stepmother and younger sister and forced into a substitute marriage to bring good fortune to a critically ill man. When she is sent to the General's Manor, her groom, Huo Chenzhou, is already on the verge of death and is not expected to survive the night. However, in the bridal chamber, she discovers that the groom is pretending to be frail, mourning clothes for a widow have already been prepared in the manor, and the military grain accounts conceal unauthorized private seals used by the second branch of the family to overstep its authority. Armed with her marriage certificate, she goes from kneeling before the ancestral spirit tablets in the main hall to locking down the account books in the accounting office, gradually exposing a three-year conspiracy behind the last-minute substitute marriage. The scheme involves intercepted military provisions, the severing of the main lineage, and the old case surrounding her late father. When the second branch uses the military tally to force the heir to surrender his authority, Ye Jinglan confronts them with three pieces of evidence: old accounts, a broken arrow, and a military order. In the final showdown, she publicly unveils the tally and verifies its seal, rewriting the ending both for the life stolen from her and for the military power stripped from the main lineage.
