Ma Ying aided the emperor in conquering the realm and shared a deep marital bond with him. The emperor affectionately called her sister and ruled the country by her side, agreeing that he would oversee state affairs while the empress managed the imperial harem and royal relatives. Loving the common people like her own children, Empress Ma practiced strict frugality, even using a gilded wooden phoenix token. Little did she expect her maiden family would exploit her prestige to commit corruption and abuse the law. With the emperor turning a blind eye out of respect for her, Empress Ma could bear it no longer and decided to return to her hometown in disguise to purge the corrupt officials.
