Poor maiden Chuntao carefully and kindly treats a stranded spirit crow, Moyu. To cure her mother, she takes only one share when facing a rare treasure, and amidst danger she risks her death to save the spirit crow again. The spirit crow, appreciating her for not being greedy for wealth and for valuing affection and righteousness, bestows upon her a magical black feather, which can produce silver taels every day to help her pay debts and support her family. The local squire Zhou Wancai covets the treasure, and under the pretext of repairing a canal plots to seize it forcibly, disrupting the village. When famine strikes, Zhou Wancai falls into a desperate situation, and Chuntao puts aside past grievances to reach out a helping hand. After the turmoil settles, Chuntao returns what was wrongfully seized, keeping a portion of the silver to fund the construction of a public canal, turning personal kindness into a blessing that benefits the neighboring villagers.

Le corbeau spirituel, reconnaissant qu'elle ne soit pas cupide et qu'elle valorise l'affection et la droiture, lui offre une plume noire magique, qui peut produire des taels d'argent chaque jour pour l'aider à rembourser ses dettes et à subvenir aux besoins de sa famille. Le notable Zhou Wancai convoite le trésor, et sous prétexte de réparer un canal, complote pour le ravir de force, troublant le village. Quand la famine frappe, Zhou Wancai se retrouve dans une situation périlleuse, et Chuntao oublie ses vieux rancœurs pour lui prêter main-forte. Une fois la tempête apaisée, Chuntao restitue ce qui a été indûment acquis, conservant une partie de l'argent pour construire un canal public, transformant sa bienveillance personnelle en un bienfait qui profite aux villageois voisins.
