The Tiger King of the Southern Ridge had two sons. The elder brother, Yanshan, was kind-hearted and believed in the symbiosis of all things; the younger brother, Heya, was fierce and believed only in establishing power through sharp claws. Xuelan, a female white tiger of the Snowy Mountain White Tiger clan, went south to play and was injured. She was rescued by Panyue and grew up with the two tigers. Heya fell in love with her, but she fell in love with the gentle Yanshan. Xuelan's true identity was exposed, and she was forcibly taken back by the White Tiger clan to be forced into a marriage with a fellow clansman. Pregnant, she escaped and ran thousands of miles back to the Southern Ridge, giving birth to a mixed-blood daughter, Qinglan, for Yanshan. Yanshan also had a son of a pure yellow tiger, Liefeng, who inherited his kind heart. The old Beast King saw through the minds of his two sons and finally passed the throne to Yanshan. Heya was unwilling to accept this and pretended to submit, secretly gathering war-foting tribes and drifting further and further away from his elder brother.

L'aîné, Yanshan, était bienveillant et croyait en la symbiose de toutes choses ; le cadet, Heya, était féroce et ne croyait qu'à l'établissement de son autorité par des griffes acérées. Xuelan, une tigresse blanche du clan du Tigre Blanc de la Montagne Enneigée, était descendue vers le sud pour s'amuser et avait été blessée, avant d'être sauvée par Panyue et de grandir avec les deux tigres. Heya était épris d'elle, mais elle était tombée amoureuse du doux Yanshan. L'identité de Xuelan ayant été découverte, elle fut ramenée de force par le clan du Tigre Blanc pour être mariée de force à un membre de sa tribu. Enceinte, elle réussit à s'échapper et courut des milliers de kilomètres pour regagner la Crête du Sud, donnant à Yanshan une fille métisse nommée Qinglan. Yanshan avait également un fils tigre pur jaune nommé Liefeng, qui avait hérité de son cœur bienveillant. Le vieux Roi des Bêtes perça à jour la mentalité de ses deux fils et finit par transmettre le trône à Yanshan. Heya, refusant de s'incliner, feignit la soumission en surface tout en rassemblant secrètement les factions belliqueuses, s'éloignant de plus en plus de son frère.
