Wen Ruotang long believed that her father, Wen Tingyu, had gone traveling, until the woodcutter Meng Chuan visited holding her father's personal thumb ring, revealing that her father had long been murdered. Joining hands with Meng Chuan, Wen Ruotang traveled everywhere, found the old housekeeper Sun Youde, and gathered evidence with the help of local squire Liang Yongtai. When the case was heard at the county yamen, the magistrate took bribes and failed to deliver justice. Undeterred, they united with the guests of that year to organize the dossier and reported up to the prefectural office level by level, restoring the full picture of the case and bringing the truth to light.
