In Chen Jianguo's vegetable garden, highly toxic water hemlock used for research by the Provincial Academy of Agricultural Sciences was stolen. Wang Guixiang, greedy for a small bargain, mistook the poisonous celery for ordinary celery and brought it home, intending to stir-fry it for her pregnant daughter-in-law, Zhang Xiaomei, to nourish her body. She stir-fried it in a pan, and although the vegetable's smell was pungent, she ignored it. Discovering that the poisonous celery had been stolen, Chen Jianguo hurriedly notified the whole village, and upon a reminder from Aunt Liu, learned that Wang Guixiang had taken it. Wang Guixiang, gananciosa por uma pechincha, confundiu o aipo venenoso com aipo comum e levou-o para casa, com a intenção de o saltear para a sua nora grávida, Zhang Xiaomei, para nutrir o seu corpo. Ela salteou-o na frigideira e, embora o cheiro do legume fosse pungente, ignorou-o.
