Lin Zhiwei, an inheritor of the traditional Old Beijing zhajiang-style braised gravy noodles, brings her family's secret recipe to her grandaunt's restaurant and works as its head chef for three years. However, her own relative betrays her and takes all the profits. Determined to start over, she relies on her exceptional culinary skills to build a business from scratch. From a chopping board at a street corner to her own independent restaurant, she remains committed to her principles: authentic ingredients, pure flavors, and freshly prepared food served immediately. Along the way, she withstands vicious price competition, financial blockades and capital cutoffs, as well as suppression and malicious schemes by an established noodle-making family. She even faces the danger of losing her restaurant in an arson attack. Yet she never abandons her craft. She trains her apprentice, Zhou Yu, who goes on to win the gold medal at the National Pastry and Noodle-Making Competition. Breaking with the old custom of keeping recipes secret, she openly shares her formula and teaches her skills to others, allowing a humble bowl of traditional braised gravy noodles to reach beyond the narrow alleyways and become an enduring part of China's folk culinary heritage.
