She farmed in the fields by day and did odd jobs at night, still unable to support her paralyzed mother-in-law and her daughter who was starving and burning with fever. The letters asking for help were intercepted one by one by Lu Mandong, rumors filled the village, and she was driven to a desperate situation. A long-distance phone call made Lu Weiguo, far away in the army, shocked to learn of the tragic situation at home, and he rushed back to the village.
