Linglong, personal maid to the Empress Dowager for seventy years, harbors a shocking secret: the reigning Emperor is not of the late Emperor's bloodline, but the child of the Empress Dowager and the Sumor barbarian king, Baili Yuan. The tale traces back to when Consort Hui, Xue Rong, endured deep humiliation to seek vengeance after her brother was persecuted by the Emperor, her sister-in-law seized, and her young son poisoned. Following a fateful night with King Baili Yuan that produced an imperial son, she used the seized sister-in-law, Consort Zhen, to administer slow poison to the Emperor. Ultimately, the Emperor collapsed and perished; Consort Hui enthroned her secret son and ruled from behind the curtain for decades.
