Renonçant à la maison et aux rizières, il choisit de son plein gré la pente aride et délaissée derrière la montagne, dans le seul but de racheter les regrets de sa vie passée et de protéger sa femme et sa fille. Partant de la cueillette de produits de la montagne et de la vente au marché, il s'appuie sur une gestion honnête pour transformer peu à peu les produits, ouvrir des boutiques et s'enrichir. Une fois sa vie améliorée, il fait toujours passer sa famille avant l'argent et résout les conflits avec ses frères grâce à des règles et au sens des responsabilités. Des années plus tard, la pente aride est plantée d'arbres fruitiers, sa fille est admise à l'école du district et la famille connaît enfin une vie paisible. Chen Mancang comprend qu'en vivant une seconde vie, le plus précieux n'est ni l'argent ni la considération, mais l'affection familiale et la compagnie.
