Driven out of her home, Pu Yu takes her mother's letter to seek shelter with her grandmother in a small town. A newcomer, she accidentally wanders into the home of her teenage neighbor, Yuan Su, who is being cornered by loan sharks after his father fled gambling debts and his mother fell gravely ill in the hospital. Pu Yu helps him out of trouble with a lie, and the two reunite in class as deskmates. A boy abandoned by the world, and a homeless girl: she reaches out to him time and again—sorting exam papers, bringing breakfast, fixing desk lamps, tying a red string left by her mother onto his wrist; he protects her with deeds—repairing the roof in a storm, carrying her up the mountain to gaze at the stars, using his last money for her grandmother's surgery.
