To quell political turmoil at court, Shen Mingzhu, the Grand Princess who protects the nation, concealed her identity and married Pei Zhixuan, a poor scholar from a humble family. She spent her entire fortune supporting him until he became a prominent court official. Yet Pei Zhixuan repaid her kindness with betrayal. He stole imperial treasures, poisoned her in an attempt to murder her, secretly carried on an affair with another woman and fathered a child with her. Worse still, he colluded with rebels, betrayed the Great Zhou's border defenses, and invited an enemy invasion. Finally awakened to the truth, Shen Mingzhu reclaimed her true identity and punished the traitors according to the law. With the unwavering support of her childhood friend Yan Ci, she quelled the internal rebellion, repelled foreign enemies, and ultimately ascended the throne as emperor.
