For six years, Cheng Yue, far away abroad, remitted money for one hundred and forty cars back home transaction by transaction. Today, quietly, he pushed open the door to the backyard of his family's auto shop, only to find his parents living in a wheel-less van, surviving by picking up bottles. His younger sister's hand was ruined, and one of her eyes had been taken away; the whole street was cursing him as a harmful scourge. He didn't argue, nor did he throw a punch. A vehicle delivery record, a row of key tags, his mother's tape-wrapped tattered ledger—he reconciled them one by one: the whereabouts of every sum of money, the owner of every signature, the authenticity of every receipt. On the day the truth was laid bare, he won back innocence for his parents, and fought back the chance for his sister to see the light again.
