Scholar Chen spent his whole life studying hard without ever passing the provincial exams. On his deathbed, he urged his eldest daughter: 'You must ensure your younger brother studies and achieves official rank, or I will die with lingering regrets.' An elder brother is like a father, and an elder sister is like a mother. Carrying her father's dying wish, Chen Zhaodi resolutely laid down her condition: anyone who wished to marry her had to send her younger brother to school. While the other villagers remained silent, a rugged refugee eagerly took Chen Zhaodi and her younger brother Chen Xiaren into his home, uncomplainingly supporting his brother-in-law's studies. Years later, to the sound of gongs and drums, yamen runners escorted Chen Xiaren back to the village: 'Sister, I have passed the provincial examinations!'
