Su Yulan was forced by her parents to marry Zhou Dazhu, the poorest man in the village, with bride price money borrowed from the local scoundrel Erlai. Three days after the wedding, Zhou Dazhu left to work far away to pay off the debt. Before he parted, Su Yulan tied a red cloth sash around her waist, vowing never to untie it until he returned. Unexpectedly, he vanished for eight long years without a word. Su Yulan shouldered the burden of caring for her parents-in-law alone, enduring vile rumors, Erlai's harassment, and village scorn. After both parents-in-law passed away, she persevered with the quiet help of Chen Changhe. Just as she finally decided to let go of the past and start anew with Chen Changhe, Zhou Dazhu returned. She demanded a divorce and set out to build a business of her own.
