Fang Zhengyi, an overworked modern office drone, is transported into the body of the magistrate of a poor county in the Great Jing dynasty. With his ahead-of-his-time thinking he transforms Taoyuan County, turning a desolate backwater into a rich and thriving land. By a twist of fate he catches the eye of the Empress and is summoned to the capital. He seems cynical and carefree, but is in fact full of clever schemes. He cleans up the court, trains the princess, stands up to the noble clans, and pushes new policies to resolve troubles at home and threats from abroad. Caught up in power struggles, he rises step by step from a humble county magistrate, serves two generations of rulers, carries out nationwide reforms that change the nation's fate, and finally becomes an all-powerful, world-changing rogue imperial tutor.
