Red and White Vie for the Road: The Shen Family's Downfall
A wedding sedan chair crashes into a funeral procession. According to an old folk custom, when red and white meet, the joyous yields to the white. Shen Yurong, the daughter of the Shen family relying on her father's fifth-rank official position, refuses to yield, ordering people to force the filial son Zhou Jingan to take the coffin back to the roadside, and also uttering light insults against commoners. Zhou Jingan, who has lost his father, endures his grief and indignation, first burying his late father, and then submitting a petition as a student. A single document shocks the court, and crimes such as relying on official power to show might and wedding ceremonies exceeding regulations are verified one by one. An imperial decree falls down, Shen's father is stripped of his official post and struck from the family registry, Shen Yurong is returned by her husband's family, and the road fight where she refused to yield even for a moment ultimately costs the entire Shen family their future.
