In a year of catastrophic drought and famine, five-year-old Xiao Yao flees into the night to escape being sold, hiding in a dilapidated temple. There, she bands together with homeless little beggars Wu Chuan, Xiaoman, Goudan, and Huzi to survive. Plagued by hunger, cold, and beatings, their lives hang by a thread. On the brink of death, Xiao Yao unexpectedly activates a portal system trading across time, allowing her to shuttle between ancient and modern worlds. The modern era offers warm meals and medicine, while the ancient mountains are covered with wild medicinal herbs. Traveling between two realms, these unfortunate children dig herbs and collect recyclables, refusing to be trampled underfoot, fighting with all their tiny strength for food, warmth, and a glimmer of hope to survive.
