When a rice planthopper outbreak causes 500 acres of rice fields in Qinghe Village to collapse, Uncle Zhao, who has grown rice for forty years, insists on using a powerful pesticide to save the crops. Jiang Wanhe, a university graduate who has returned to her hometown to serve as the village Party secretary, desperately tries to stop him, warning that the pesticide will kill every rice paddy fish in the fields. Forced to choose sides, the entire village is divided. Jiang Wanhe fights to protect fifty acres of demonstration fields without pesticides, insisting on a rice-fish co-cultivation system. After the pesticide residues in the rice exceed safety limits, Uncle Zhao finally admits his mistake. A cooperative is established, and Sister Liu offers a high price to purchase the rice through premium distribution channels. However, Yuanda Group schemes to take control of the cooperative and seize its geographical indication certification, while Sun Tieqiao builds a dam to extort water fees. El tío Zhao, que lleva cuarenta años cultivando arroz, quiere utilizar un pesticida muy potente para salvar la cosecha. Jiang Wanhe, una universitaria que ha regresado a su pueblo natal y es secretaria del partido de la aldea, intenta impedírselo a toda costa, pues si se aplica ese producto, ni un solo pez de los arrozales sobrevivirá. Todos los habitantes se ven obligados a tomar partido.
