During the severe drought of 1945, the village of Kaoshan suffered total crop failure. To save his starving family, hunter Zhao Dayong dug into a mountain rat burrow to seize its hoard of grain and burned the nest of pups, enraging the mountain's evil spirit. From then on, bizarre and horrifying occurrences unfolded one after another: a madwoman demanding a life, his wife suffering seizures, his mother vanishing, and villagers losing their minds. Zhao Dayong initially refused to believe in retribution and fought back, but his resolve crumbled through a series of chilling terrors. When a tragedy buried for fifteen years is finally unearthed, it turns out the madwoman lost her child to the villagers' cold cruelty. Her vengeance aims not merely at Zhao Dayong, but serves as a trial for the entire village.
