Adapted from the classic tale in Feng Menglong's Stories to Caution the World from the Ming dynasty. During the late reign of Emperor Huan of the Eastern Han, the impoverished scholar Sima Mao, styled Zhongxiang, was well-read and talented, yet unrecognized and thwarted in his ambitions. Filled with simmering resentment, he wrote a poem of grievances and burned it so that it would reach the heavenly court. Upon reading it, the Jade Emperor was initially angered, but upon the recommendation of a heavenly official, granted him a chance at trial, summoning him to the Underworld to investigate and judge old cases, giving him a limited time of six hours to retry the historical grievances between Chu and Han. Sima Zhongxiang presided over the court, examining the entanglements and rights and wrongs of figures like Liu Bang, Xiang Yu, Han Xin, and Ying Bu, analyzing the past and passing judgment on historical merits and faults. As the six-hour trial concluded and the dust settled on the old cases, Sima Zhongxiang's fair rulings earned the recognition of heaven, opening a legendary prologue that transcends time.
