Bailing, a millennial Nüwa descendant, was heavily injured during her heavenly tribulation. Her human-headed and snake-tailed body was washed ashore by waves and saved by a debt-ridden fisherman, Zhang Yufu. Bailing told him that her tears could turn into gold, asking only to leave after being saved. However, the fisherman was greedy and colluded with his wife, Cuihua, to imprison her in the firewood room, whipping and splashing her with cold water day and night to force her to weep and produce gold. When Bailing's spiritual power was exhausted, the two cruelly stripped off her scales in exchange for treasures, and discarded the dying spirit snake onto a desolate beach after draining her value. The lonely and kind Granny Li accidentally discovered the dying Bailing, cared for her meticulously despite others' gossip, and even sold her ancestral silver bracelet in exchange for healing herbs.
