In the twelfth lunar month of 1985, an unprecedented freezing rain and blizzard completely sealed off Liushugou, a mountain village in northern China. The old house of widow Liu Chunxing collapsed, pinning her daughter Xiaoman beneath a beam while her son Shitou ran a persistent high fever. In a panic, her brother-in-law Liang Guozhu seized their remaining food rations and quilts. Just as the whole family was on the brink of hypothermia, Liu Chunxing bonded with a Winter Survival System. When spring arrived, Chunxing did not become wealthy, trading only frozen tofu and pickles for oil, salt, and schoolbooks; though the system deactivated, the skills remained, and the person once deemed the weakest taught the entire village how to survive together.
