Failed scholar Wang Zhihe accidentally picks up an evil jade called the "Soul-Consuming Jade", which can grant three wishes but at the cost of absorbing the wisher's soul and essence. In succession, he wishes for wealth, official rank, and a beautiful wife. After indulging in supreme splendor, the terrifying backlash strikes swiftly—his family ruined, and his body haunted by evil spirits. Seeking liberation, he originally intended to pass the jade to someone else, but could not bear to harm the innocent. Later, he meets the villain Lin Kunquan and learns of his heinous crimes of murdering his lover and robbing ancient tombs, deciding to let him shoulder the karmic debt. After stealing the jade, Lin Kunquan commits crimes again and is killed by vengeful ghosts. Having witnessed the workings of karmic retribution, Wang Zhihe awakens to the truth, seeks Daoist arts to deliver the dead, shatters the jade to dispel the evil karma, and safeguards his true heart.
