Because Cui Lanyu harbored feelings for her adoptive brother, the Third Prince Murong Yan, she was banished to Mingyue Nunnery to reflect on her actions. After enduring three years of brutal abuse, she ultimately froze and starved to death. Seven days after her death, the King of Hell granted her spirit permission to return to the capital and resolve her mortal ties. Murong Yan came to take her back, yet he still suspected her of playing deceitful tricks—only to be struck with boundless regret when the truth came to light. In the end, Murong Yan personally performed a fire ritual to put Cui Lanyu's soul to rest, paying the ultimate price for his former coldness.
