After hunter Chen Fan falls ill with tuberculosis and can no longer hunt, the family of his eldest brother Chen Chaoyang, whom he once supported, shows no gratitude. To save food, they push the gravely ill man off the waterfall behind the mountain and plan to sell his wife Lin Wanwan and five-year-old daughter Yaya for money. Hanging between life and death, the black dog Dahei, whom Chen Fan freed from a trap three years ago, suddenly appears and risks its life to save its master from a wolf's jaws. From a sickly hunter abandoned by his own kin, Chen Fan grows into the pillar the whole village trusts, leading his wife, daughter, his spirit dog and the villagers through famine, and truly turning the mountains into a treasure trove that will feed generations.
