A century ago at a war-torn border pass, Chu Ling, a celestial master of Mount Lingxian, set up a formation alone to protect an entire city from invading enemies. Burning out her divine soul in martyrdom, only a remnant wisp and her jade compass were left behind. Unwilling to let Chu Ling vanish, her master preserved the remnant soul with Daoist arts and cast her into a hundred-year slumber until the fated time arrived to reassemble her soul. A century later, her master finally awakens her and reveals that her soul is incomplete. Only by journeying through the mortal realm to gather tears laden with all forms of true human emotion can she restore her divine soul and avert total extinction. With the jade compass guiding her quest for tears, her master casts a spell sending Chu Ling down the mountain to begin her trial.
